ABC Suit Against Trump Settled for 15 Million Dollars
Donald Trump settled charges against ABC News in the defamation case of George Stephanopolous for 15 million dollars. Publicly filed on Saturday, the settlement stated that the network would pay the sum to the “presidential foundation and museum,” and that ABC would cover one million dollars of Trump’s legal fees. This suit was created following Stephanopoulos's on-air interview with Republican Representative Nancy Mace, in which he stated 10 times that a jury had found Trump guilty of the rape of E. Jean Carroll. While the jury in the case found Trump liable of battery, they did not find sufficient evidence to prove he raped her. Carroll was, however, awarded five million dollars for battery and defamation, in addition to 83.3 million dollars in damages with regards to defamatory statements Trump made of her. Upon the dismissal of Trump’s countersuit against Carroll, Judge Lewis Kaplan found that “Indeed, the jury’s verdict in Carroll II establishes, as against Mr Trump, the fact that Mr Trump ‘raped her’, albeit digitally rather than with his penis. Thus, it establishes against him the substantial truth of Ms Carroll’s ‘rape’ accusations.”
The settlement came a day following a judicial ruling that both Trump and Stephanopolous would be required to sit for deposition in the coming week, which would have presented potential legal risks to Trump as he prepares for his coming presidency.
Mckinsey and Company Set to Pay 650 Million Dollars as a Result of Their Role in the Opioid Crisis
Due to their assisting Purdue Pharma in the “turbocharging” of OxyContin, a highly addictive opioid and popular painkiller, McKinsey and Company agreed to pay 650 million dollars to settle a federal probe into these practices. "It was a strategy, it was executed and it worked. McKinsey's strategy resulted in prescriptions for Oxycontin that were unsafe and medically unnecessary." stated Christopher Kavanaugh, a U.S. attorney in a press conference held Friday. Martin Elling, a former senior partner at the firm, also pled guilty to the obstruction of justice through destroying records concerning Mckinsey’s involvement with Purdue. He is set to face up to a year in prison as per his plea agreement.
Gukesh Dommaraju Becomes the Youngest World Chess Champion
At only 18 years old, Guskesh Dommaraju of India became the youngest world chess champion following his win against China’s Ding Liren. Unseating Gary Kasparov, who held this title at the age of 22, Dommaraju’s win solidified India’s standing on the global chess stage. The International Chess Federation described the game as one with “near-perfect accuracy,” seemingly priming it for a draw. However, in an attempt to force a draw, Liren made the blunder of sacrificing one of his rooks to capture Dommaraju’s, which cost him the game. "Since the time I started playing chess ... I've been dreaming about living this moment for more than 10 years," stated Dommaraju in a press conference upon his victory.
